What it takes to be a volunteer

Commit to help a student or teacher thrive through the duration of the school year.
Able to connect with your student at least once a week during school hours.
Pass a background check and clearance requirements (more details below).
Complete one 2-3 hour volunteer program-specific virtual training session.

How to become a volunteer

Applications are officially open to sign up as a mentor, Mindfulness volunteer, or tutor for the 2025-26 school year.

Clearance

As part of the school district's requirements, all volunteers must pass a background check and provide proof of a negative tuberculosis (TB) test. The background check process includes listing two references on the volunteer application and participating in Live Scan fingerprinting. Once the volunteer assignment has started, all volunteers must also complete an online Mandated Reporter Training course. You will learn more information about our clearance requirements during the training.

Training

Aspiring volunteers can register for a training while completing an application. During the training, facilitators will discuss the best ways to engage with students and/or school staff and will provide guidance around session planning, activities, and effective practices. Our online and in-person trainings are a great opportunity to ask any questions about volunteering with the SF Ed Fund!

Staff Support

Each volunteer has a point person coordinator from the SF Ed Fund who will provide ongoing support and check-ins. Before you get started, our coordinators will match you with the right opportunity based on the selected volunteer program: Mindfulness, mentoring, or tutoring/ general classroom support.

Community

You will receive invitations to join virtual volunteer check-ins, register for supplemental trainings, and attend other special events throughout the year.

Board Members & YLC
