For Volunteers

Join a team of caring adults who are supporting San Francisco students in meaningful ways. The San Francisco Education Fund matches vetted volunteers with local teachers and students to support in the classroom for one hour a week.

Volunteer to Help Teachers Set Up Their Classrooms on Friday, August 14!

Did you know SFUSD educators get just one paid day to set up their classrooms for the entire school year? With so much to do and so little time, a single three-hour volunteer shift during the SF Ed Fund's annual Back-to-School Setup Day can make a big difference. Volunteers take on key tasks like setting up bulletin boards, hanging posters, moving furniture, organizing books, painting, and cleaning, helping create a welcoming, ready-to-learn environment for students from day one.

Complete one 2-3 hour volunteer program-specific virtual training session.

How to become a volunteer

Applications will open soon to become a volunteer for the 2026-27 school year!

Clearance

As part of the school district's requirements, all volunteers must pass a background check and provide proof of a negative tuberculosis (TB) test. The background check process includes listing two references on the volunteer application and participating in Live Scan fingerprinting. Once the volunteer assignment has started, all volunteers must also complete an online Mandated Reporter Training course. You will learn more information about our clearance requirements during the training.

Training

Aspiring volunteers can register for a training while completing an application. During the training, facilitators will discuss the best ways to engage with students and/or school staff and will provide guidance around session planning, activities, and effective practices. Our online and in-person trainings are a great opportunity to ask any questions about volunteering with the SF Ed Fund!

Staff Support

Each volunteer has a point person coordinator from the SF Ed Fund who will provide ongoing support and check-ins. Before you get started, our coordinators will match you with the right opportunity based on the selected volunteer program: Mindfulness, Mentoring, or Classroom Support.

Community

You will receive invitations to join virtual volunteer check-ins, register for supplemental trainings, and attend other special events throughout the year.

Board Members & YLC
