Activity Idea: Word Families

by SF Ed Fund on
Here's an activity idea for practicing word families, from volunteer Gina at El Dorado:Word Family GameWord Family Game"I try to have roughly the same number of words per word family. I make little bags with about 4-7 word families in each. Some families have more words than others associated with them so I’m able to have more families in those bags than in others. I got my word lists from this website: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/rhymes/wordfamilies/.From there, I just printed out all of the words and families (trying to make the family labels a little larger so my students can clearly see them during the game). When I’m working on this game the goal is fairly simple: match the word with its family. I make my bags so it takes about 3-4 sessions to go through all of the words (we usually only spend about 10 minutes doing this activity). As the student correctly matches the word with its family root, I also have them use it in a sentence to help them understand the meaning of the word. Once we get through the entire bag of words, the student gets a sticker to put on their reading journal. I had first tried this without the sticker incentive but found that even a simple prize like a sticker helped motivate my students and made it a fun game rather than another “boring” academic activity."Thanks for sharing, Gina!
