San Francisco Unified School District is the seventh largest district in California with more than 150 schools and 50,000 students.
The San Francisco Education Fund has programs that support students and educators across San Francisco public schools, but we work most deeply in schools which have limited resources and benefit greatly from community support.
A Look into Three K-12 Excelsior Schools
Strategically, the Ed Fund has identified priority neighborhoods in which we provide significant case management and prioritize our time and resources: Bayview-Hunters Point, Excelsior/Visitacion Valley, Mission District/Bernal, and Tenderloin/SOMA.
We continue to offer programs and resources across the entire district, however we prioritize schools in these areas for first access to:
Placement of community volunteers (tutors, classroom assistants, mentors, and Mindfulness instructors)
Corporate support from a Circle the Schools partner (if not already matched)
Eligibility to apply for mini grants for students and teachers
Long term, we believe that prioritizing fewer schools and providing a high level of committed support will substantively advance whole child equity at those schools.
Schools within these four neighborhoods were selected as priority schools based on the following criteria:
50%+ students of color
50%+ students receiving free/reduced lunch
50%+ students not yet proficient on math and/or literacy.
For the Schools
Being a priority school means:
Getting matched with a specific staff contact at the Ed Fund who will build a strong understanding of the school’s vision and unique needs
Receiving priority access to the Ed Fund’s programs, resources, and grants
If desired/needed, having a thought partner as they are designing their community schools around possible solutions or supports
Why this matters:
The school gets support faster with a relationship manager they can connect with regularly
The school gets personalized thought partnership in how Ed Fund services can fit their schools’ needs
