Last week, students in Thurgood Marshall Academic High School’s Filipino Youth Coalition hosted a Halo Halo night. Halo Halo is a Filipino ice cream dessert that translates to “mix mix,” so students shared “mix mix” at a mixer, of sorts.

Students celebrated their Filipino culture through food and dance performances, and showed a video from their tour of Southern California colleges, a trip funded by a grant from the Education Fund.

During their spring break this year, students visited UC Davis, CSU Fullerton and UCLA, taking the opportunity to meet with Filipino student groups at each stop to build culture and create a sense of community. As Senior Sean noted, “When you meet somebody from the school, it changes everything… You get to actually know what it’s like to be in a college, instead of knowing what a college is.”

The Filipino Youth Coalition’s college tour was one of four college tours this year funded by Education Fund grants through our College & Career Readiness Program.
