Former Bay Area YMCA Executive to Steer Next Phase of Growth and Community Service Innovation to Improve Education Equality at San Francisco Public Schools

SAN FRANCISCO, December 11, 2017 — The San Francisco Education Fund today announced the appointment of Gina M. Fromer, MS to CEO.  Fromer, who previously served as Regional Vice President of YMCA of the East Bay, will succeed Kimberly Wicoff who stepped down in July.  Fromer will begin her new role on December 11, 2017 with a focus on steering the organization’s next phase of growth and program innovation to help ensure San Francisco’s highest need public school students get the education they require to achieve their personal best.

“The San Francisco Education Fund Board of Directors is thrilled to welcome Gina Fromer as our new CEO,” says Jessica Bier, Board President.  “The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) is the highest performing urban school district in California, but it also has the biggest gap between highest-achieving and lowest-achieving students.  The Education Fund’s role is to help put the ‘public’ back in public schools, and Gina brings with her 20 years in executive leadership roles working with youth in the Bay area, and an unparalleled community network with Bay area stakeholders.  We know that Gina is the right choice to help build on our rich history of success and give SFUSD’s teachers the community power and dollars they need to assure the education equality for every student.”

The San Francisco Education Fund is the only local nonprofit that brings trained volunteers and grants into the classroom to help public school teachers provide each student the education they deserve.  For more than 50 years, the San Francisco Education Fund has trained and placed nearly 100,000 volunteers in the classroom, given more than seven million dollars in teacher grants, and distributed over $5 million in scholarships to San Francisco public school graduates. During this school year, San Francisco Education Fund volunteers are on track to devote over 60,000 hours tutoring and mentoring close to 28,000 public school students.

“As a sixth-generation San Franciscan, I have always believed a quality public education is a basic human right, and a veritable game changer in the lives of families and children,” says Gina Fromer, CEO, San Francisco Education Fund.  “I’m looking forward to continuing my path in working with Bay Area youth in a new and exciting capacity.  The San Francisco Education Fund plays a unique and vital role in our community schools to make sure all of our students are equipped with the tools they need to succeed.”

Gina most recently served as the Regional Vice President of the YMCA of the East Bay and previously spent eight years as the District Vice President of the Bayview YMCA, as well as six years as Associate Executive Director of YMCA San Francisco, Urban Services.  Fromer also served for nearly three years as the California State Director for the Trust for Public Land, and holds a Master of Science in Industrial Psychology from the University of Phoenix, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Dominican University.
