A Lovely Synchronicity: How Volunteers Welcomed Ms. Martinez Back

It was the afternoon of December 21, 2017 and teachers in the San Francisco Unified School District were mere moments away from a well-deserved winter break. Marisa Martinez, kindergarten teacher at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, was not closing her door, but opening it. Ms. Martinez was returning from a semester of bereavement leave after losing her daughter, Zamora Moon, to an aggressive and incurable brain cancer known as Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

Encouraging Coders One Hour at a Time

#HourOfCode swept the nation as a hallmark of Computer Science Education Week (December 4 – 10, 2017), during which 10 of SFUSD’s elementary and middle schools teamed up with the Education Fund to bring volunteers into classrooms.
