On Wednesday, October 14, 2009, teachers, students, and public education supporters came together to honor our volunteer, school, and partnership of the year. Attendees enjoyed performances by the Academy of Arts and Sciences' Taiko Drummers before hearing from Assistant Superintendant Richard Carranza and this year's awardees.
The program closed with the Fabulous Fairmount Falcon Choir singing Cat Stevens' “If You Want to Sing Out, Sing Out,” and everyone left ready for another exciting school year.
2009 Volunteer of the Year
George Kelly
From the moment he walks through the door, George Kelly has the classroom energized. A volunteer for the past ten years, he uses funny voices and interjects life lessons into the stories he reads. George shares books that reinforce how the classroom is a little world where students can learn how to be peaceful in the bigger one.
Gateway High School staff has mastered providing each volunteer with the support and attention needed to ensure success for both the students and themselves. Volunteers appreciate the “smiles, thanks, professionalism and cups of tea” from the staff. Joanne Wells, the volunteer coordinator, works closely with volunteers on engaging the students.
Everett Middle School's year kicks off with a pizza party, served by Hanson Bridgett volunteers. Understanding the importance of healthy eating and communication, Hanson Bridgett provides healthy snacks after school and prints the newsletter to parents. Additionally, employees volunteer as tutors in two classes and lead a boys mentoring group.
