Congratulations to Our 2017 Distinguished Service Award Winners

We celebrated Volunteer Recognition Day by raising a glass to our incredible school volunteers. Last night we honored volunteers and announced the recipients of our Distinguished Service Awards over appetizers, drinks and a beautiful, clear-skied view of the Bay from the headquarters of Williams-Sonoma. See photos from this event on our Facebook page.

Each year, the San Francisco Education Fund faces a big challenge in choosing the recipients of our Distinguished Service Awards, and this year was no exception. Teachers and school staff nominated a total of 86 individual volunteers and company partners, and we narrowed it down to one volunteer from our Signature Programs (Literacy, Math and College & Career Readiness), one from our general Tutoring & Classroom Support program and one Circle the Schools company partner.

This year we also announced the recipient of our first-ever Lifetime Service Award.

And the winners are…

Deborah Reames, a Literacy Program tutor who volunteers at Junipero Serra Elementary each week and has worked to bring more science programming to the school. Read her story here.

George Cruys, who has dedicated more than 15 years at the Chinese Education Center. Read his story here.

Xoom, the winner of our corporate Distinguished Service Award, has become a mainstay at Junipero Serra Elementary. Read Xoom’s story here.

Mark Freeman, the recipient of our Lifetime Service Award, has volunteered for 20 years with the very same teacher and has even gone with her through changes in schools. From elementary school to middle school, Mark lets students know they belong. Read his story here.

We’re so proud of all of our volunteers! Thank you for the awe-inspiring work you do to improve your communities.
